Nearing the End

This is probably the last post for this blog. I've already created the new one, but am yet to post anything. The new blog's address will be theavenuecc.blogspot.com.

Sorry to not have a reading plan ready for December. I've been busy with other things. Hopefully you've been able to search the Bible on your own. Trust me, it's full of great stuff. I do however have a topic for our Christmas series. Perhaps this alone will be enough to spur some discussion

Vision

A few years ago, we sat down as a church and outlined some things that God had laid on our hearts about what the future of Four Seasons' ministry would look like. You can read the full vision at our church website, but here is the short version. We believe in the power of prayer, intimate fellowship, diversity, using multiple campuses, children and youth ministry, helping those in need, equipping people for life, partnering with fellow believers and business as a resource for ministry. As you think about this list, perhaps for the first time (or first time in a while), what about it jumps out at you? What speaks to your heart? As we look at some major changes in the future, these values will not. In fact, the changes we are making are for the express purpose of being able to BETTER do these things. When I consider this, my heart races with joy. What is your heart feeling?

Thy Kingdom Come - final

Time to tie up as many loose ends as we can regarding the Kingdom. Of course, we haven't even come close to exhausting all there is to contemplate about the Kingdom, but hopefully we have gone far enough to expand our vision and increase our obedience. This week we will be looking at some of the "yet to come" aspects of the Kingdom. Regardless of how we interpret some of these passages (and their timing), one thing is certain, Jesus is coming again and this is a very good thing. Please post your thoughts and questions. I will be out of town most of the week, but hopefully I'll be able to check in. God bless you!

Thy Kingdom Come - week 3

Many people characterize the time in which we live as the "already" and the "not yet" of the Kingdom. This reflects the truth that in some ways, the Kingdom was instituted with Christ's first advent. It also tells us that things are not yet finished. This week we will focus on the "already" parts of the Kingdom. This aspect of the Kingdom is very different from what many people expected when Christ came. I think they had eyes for the finished product, not realizing that first the Kingdom would be established spiritually. Jesus' teaching confronted this confusion. This time in history (our time) has also been referred to as the church age, because of the prominent role the church has in God's unfolding plan. However, this does not mean that "the church" is an interchangeable term with "the Kingdom." What's the difference? What's your opinion?

Thy Kingdom Come - week 1

Hey...J had a great idea for a sermon series...take a closer look at the Kingdom of God. The Kingdom is an often references item in the New Testament. Many of Jesus' parables teach us about the Kingdom. Paul also has some great things to say about it. Despite all this, the Kingdom is still somewhat of a mystery. What is it? Where is it? When is it? These are all great questions. We are going to take the next four weeks and investigate the beauty and the mystery of the Kingdom.

We will start by focusing on the history of Kingdom thinking. When Jesus taught about the Kingdom, He was often challenging people's ideas about what the Kingdom was or would be. Where did they get their ideas? A big part of their picture comes from the writings of Daniel. This Sunday we will take a closer look at Daniel 2 and 7, examining how these chapters helped form the Jewish idea of the Kingdom of God. What comes to your mind when you think about the Kingdom?

The new reading plan for all four weeks is posted at the church website.

The Future

Just thought we might take this week to discuss our thoughts and questions about the future of Four Seasons. Obedience is the goal. Please pray this week for our church and then share what God is telling you. Maybe God is leading you to a Scripture you think we should all read. Whatever it might be, just pray and share. That's what this week is for.

Ezra - week 5

The last two chapters of Ezra are really challenging. Ezra confronts sin (which is good), but in doing so he divides families (that's the tough part). We will take a closer look at this on Sunday, but after reading the passage, what about it challenges you?

Although not a part of the "official reading list", I suggest comparing Ezra 9-10 with Nehemiah 13:23-31. The same issue is being addressed.

Ezra - week 4

It's been an exciting trip so far...returning from exile, laying the foundation, persecution and delays, confronted with the Word of God, completing the temple...all really great stuff. Now it's time for our hero to enter the story! Ezra was a man with a call on his life, a passionate man of purpose. In this week's reading, we will listen to the story of his return journey. Pay special attention to how his faith is practically applied to the circumstances of the trip.

What are some of the challenges you face in attempting to integrate your faith and life? I know for me, the first battle is confronting the lie that faith is only a part of my life. The truth is my faith is my life. I AM a child of God; a sinner turned saint by the blood of Christ. That's who I am always. Because that's not how much of the world views it, I have to constantly remind myself that being a Christ follower is not a part-time job. I don't even get a vacation! I'm in a season right now where that is good news. I long to be obedient every day. I can't say that's always been the case. I'm so glad that God is perfectly committed to us. He never takes time off from being our Father, Redeemer, or Friend. God, I praise You for Your steadfast love. Forgive us. Strengthen us.

Ezra - week 3

Whenever you attempt something great for God, there will be opposition. This is what happened to the Jews. As they begin to rebuild the temple, the surrounding people try to stop it. In cases like this, we have to make a decision: remain obedient or give up. Often we lament such times, but these are the times in our lives when we grow. We learn new things about God and ourselves as we move forward in trust. Have you faced opposition in the process of being obedient? What did you learn about God? How did God speak to you in this tough time? When we look back and view our circumstances through this kind of lens, you see how it becomes possible to be thankful in all circumstances. God is always there, always leading, always giving us the chance to know Him better and experience Him more fully. Regardless of the circumstances, this is something we can always be thankful for.

Ezra - week 2

Getting home was just the beginning. Now the Israelites have to work and rebuild the Temple. It is interesting the mix of emotions the people have (check it out...Ezra 3:11-13) . I don't know how we might respond with that kind of outpouring at one of our services. We are so dedicated to bringing out the joy in people sometimes we keep them from being real. Personally, I think it would be tremendous because the "noise" would have the sweetness of honesty. Sunday night at our church's prayer service I was overwhelmed with my own mix of emotion. I was frustrated, confused, and angry, yet at the same time, joyed and hopeful. I'm glad we don't have to have things figured out. It is much easier to let go and be obedient! I also think it is interesting that in the midst of my confusion, I felt as though my heart was agreeing with God's. God is the only one I know who can be perfectly justified in his anger, yet remain perfectly steadfast in his love. That kind of conflict would eventually tear us apart. I guess, in a sense, it tore God apart as well as it prompted him to send his Son to the cross. On the cross we see God's love and anger reconciled. There is so much I don't understand, yet more than anything I'm grateful.

Back to Ezra...God's present temple, the Church (universal), is truly a thing of beauty. Yet I weep knowing it could be even more beautiful. I long for the church's apostolic beauty to shine again. I know it can. I believe it will.

Ezra - week 1

Hello friends! Although we all want to stay in the FLOW (and thank God we can!), this week we start on a new journey. One found in the Old Testament of the Bible. We are going to be reading through the book of Ezra, along with some readings from the prophets. This is the time in biblical history when the Jews returned to Israel from their exile and begin to rebuild. The title of the teaching series is "The Path to Restoration". While this describes Israel, I hope we can find some application for our own lives and the life of the church. This week we will be discussing the first step, which was the return home. Does anyone have any good stories about returning home?

The reading plan is available at www.fourseasonschurch.org.

FLOW

"Flow" is the title of our summer teaching series. It revolves around living life in the stream of the Holy Spirit (Jn 7:38). The title is also ironic because we need to get back in the flow of dialoging on the blog! I'm looking forward to some good questions and answers. This post will serve us the end of this week and heading into next. God bless us all as we seek to follow the leading of the Spirit in our lives. May God's presence be overwhelming in our lives.

Ruth 4

This week we will be talking about how Boaz's redemption of Naomi and Ruth is like Christ's work in our lives. If you have questions that arise from the reading please post them. I'm hopeful that we can post some thoughts from our time in the prayer room in KC, so look in for that as well. Have a blessed week.

Ruth 3

This Sunday we will be discussing the concept of propriety, or doing things the right way. Sometimes propriety puts us at odds with what we think is the quickest path to get what we want (even when we want good things). In our culture, the plan is usually, "Do what you want to get what you want." God's plan is always, "Do what I want and I'll give you what I want." For the believer, this is good news because as our hearts mature, we begin to desire what God wants for us. We also realize that His plan is always best. Still, it takes discipline to stay the course when it appears that we are putting the outcome at risk. Ruth's story is a great illustration of how God rewards those who do what is right. In your life, how has a sense of propriety affected the way you make decisions? If it hasn't been a conscious consideration, have you felt its pressure on your heart unexpectedly? Do the ends ever justify the means?

Hebrews 13

Well, this does it for Hebrews. It's been a fun trip. I think we are heading to Ruth next, and after that a topical study on living life in the Spirit. Take this chance to leave any parting reflections on Hebrews. Since Mother's Day is right around the corner, we can talk about how much we love our momma's too.

Hebrews 12

Hi everyone,
Sorry for the late start this week. The new reading plan is posted on the church website, www.fourseasonschurch.org. Leave your thoughts and questions.

Hebrews 11

Way to bounce back! Lots of great discussion last week, let's keep it going. Hebrews 11 is a recounting of Israel's "Hall of Faith". We will read about some of these men and women during the week but can't cover them all. What are some of the lessons you have gleaned from these historical "witnesses" of faith?

Also, we will finish Hebrews soon. Any suggestions on what to study next?

Hebrews 10

Okay, we had our first blank week last post. Let's all commit to doing better.

Monday, April 6, 2009

Hebrews 9

Even though we are investigating Hebrews 9 this week, we also want to acknowledge Passion Week. So, if you have questions or comments about Hebrews or the resurrection, post 'em!

Have a blessed week...and invite a friend to church this Sunday!

Hebrews 8

We are back on schedule this week. Sunday's message will come from Hebrews 8. Your input always helps me determine a direction or focus. Post your thoughts, questions and comments.

Monday, March 23, 2009

Hebrews 7

Well, no sermon this week from Hebrews 7, so the blog is your best chance to get answers you may have re: this chapter. Of course, you can always comment on the other readings for the week as well. Have a great week!

Hebrews 6

As I mentioned on Sunday, Hebrews 6 is a bit controversial. It has been interpreted a few different ways. The first three verses have had their own place in the history of church division, as have the meaning of the strong warning of v. 4-8. As we discuss this passage and share our questions and answers, let's not lose focus of what we can be confident about. "We have this hope - like a sure and firm anchor of the soul" (v. 19). Praise be to our High Priest Jesus!

Hebrews 5

There is a part in Hebrews 5 that is a strong rebuke to many Christians: "You have been Christians a long time now, and you ought to be teaching others. Instead, you need someone to teach you again the basic things a beginner must learn about the Scriptures." (5:12) Maturing in the Christian faith is an intentional process that includes the study of His Word. It WILL NOT happen by any other means. That's why something as simple as this blog can have such a strong impact. If you spend time in God's Word and meditate on it, your relationship with the Lord will be strengthened. It really is simple. But it is a blessing we often overlook. I say all that as an encouragement. Read the Bible regularly. It's worth it.

Hebrews 4

If you have questions about any of the readings for this week, from Hebrews 4 or elsewhere, please share them. This forum is your chance to get answers...or at least educated opinions!

Have a blessed week!

Hebrews 3

Welcome to Hebrews 3! Verse one reads, "Therefore, holy brothers, who share in the heavenly calling, fix your thoughts on Jesus, the apostle and high priest whom we confess." (NIV) In this verse, what do you think the word apostle means? Second, if Jesus is our perfect high priest, in what ways is he also a perfect apostle?

Hebrews 2

Welcome to Hebrews chapter two!

Joe/Vicky posted this under "Hebrews 1"

In Hebrews chapter 2 it says that Jesus was made a little lower than the angels (vs 7 & 9). Doesn't that contradict what we learned in Chapter 1? What am I missing?

It's a good question...any opinions before I answer?

Hebrews 1

Welcome to our new series, "Faithful Words Fulfilled". This series will take us through the book of Hebrews. This New Testament book uses more material from the Old Testament than any other, hence the title of our series. You'll notice in our reading plan (available at www.fourseasonschurch.org) that there is some extra credit reading each week. If you tackle these assignments, you will have read through the book of Leviticus in addition to Hebrews when we are finished. Why Leviticus? Because Hebrews seeks to present Christ as superior to the old Levitical sacrificial system. Reading one will certainly help you understand the other. There is a wealth of wonderful insights in Hebrews and I'm excited to be studying it together. May God bless us all as we spend time in His Word.

Thessalonian Thinking

We did not have a formal reading plan for this week. Instead we are simply reading through I Thessalonians. This short letter has some great advice for churches. What stands out to you?

Kingdom Currency

Jeremy is taking us through a teaching series on Sunday mornings called "Kingdom Currency." The reading plan for this is posted on the church site (www.fourseasonschurch.org). The series will take three weeks. Money is usually not fun to talk about, but good stewardship can prove to be very rewarding and a source of joy. I'm sure J will post some discussion questions along the way, so check in periodically to see what's new.
