You can read the full vision at our church website, but here is the short version. We believe in the power of prayer, intimate fellowship, diversity, using multiple campuses, children and youth ministry, helping those in need, equipping people for life, partnering with fellow believers and business as a resource for ministry. As you think about this list, perhaps for the first time (or first time in a while), what about it jumps out at you? What speaks to your heart? As we look at some major changes in the future, these values will not. In fact, the changes we are making are for the express purpose of being able to BETTER do these things. When I consider this, my heart races with joy. Of course, we haven't even come close to exhausting all there is to contemplate about the Kingdom, but hopefully we have gone far enough to expand our vision and increase our obedience. This week we will be looking at some of the "yet to come" aspects of the Kingdom. Regardless of how we interpret some of these passages (and their timing), one thing is certain, Jesus is coming again and this is a very good thing. Please post your thoughts and questions. This reflects the truth that in some ways, the Kingdom was instituted with Christ's first advent. It also tells us that things are not yet finished. This week we will focus on the "already" parts of the Kingdom. This aspect of the Kingdom is very different from what many people expected when Christ came. I think they had eyes for the finished product, not realizing that first the Kingdom would be established spiritually. Jesus' teaching confronted this confusion. This time in history (our time) has also been referred to as the church age, because of the prominent role the church has in God's unfolding plan. However, this does not mean that "the church" is an interchangeable term with "the Kingdom." What's the difference? What's your opinion?

Thy Kingdom Come - week 1

Hey...J had a great idea for a sermon series...take a closer look at the Kingdom of God. The Kingdom is an often references item in the New Testament. Many of Jesus' parables teach us about the Kingdom. Paul also has some great things to say about it. Despite all this, the Kingdom is still somewhat of a mystery. What is it? Where is it? When is it? These are all great questions. We are going to take the next four weeks and investigate the beauty and the mystery of the Kingdom.

We will start by focusing on the history of Kingdom thinking. When Jesus taught about the Kingdom, He was often challenging people's ideas about what the Kingdom was or would be. Where did they get their ideas? A big part of their picture comes from the writings of Daniel. This Sunday we will take a closer look at Daniel 2 and 7, examining how these chapters helped form the Jewish idea of the Kingdom of God. What comes to your mind when you think about the Kingdom?

The new reading plan for all four weeks is posted at the church website.

The Future

Just thought we might take this week to discuss our thoughts and questions about the future of Four Seasons. Now it's time for our hero to enter the story! Ezra was a man with a call on his life, a passionate man of purpose. In this week's reading, we will listen to the story of his return journey. Pay special attention to how his faith is practically applied to the circumstances of the trip.

What are some of the challenges you face in attempting to integrate your faith and life? I know for me, the first battle is confronting the lie that faith is only a part of my life. The truth is my faith is my life. I AM a child of God; a sinner turned saint by the blood of Christ. That's who I am always. Because that's not how much of the world views it, I have to constantly remind myself that being a Christ follower is not a part-time job. I don't even get a vacation! I'm in a season right now where that is good news. I long to be obedient every day. I can't say that's always been the case. I'm so glad that God is perfectly committed to us. He never takes time off from being our Father, Redeemer, or Friend. God, I praise You for Your steadfast love. Forgive us. Strengthen us.

Ezra - week 3

Whenever you attempt something great for God, there will be opposition. This is what happened to the Jews. As they begin to rebuild the temple, the surrounding people try to stop it. In cases like this, we have to make a decision: remain obedient or give up. Often we lament such times, but these are the times in our lives when we grow. We learn new things about God and ourselves as we move forward in trust. Have you faced opposition in the process of being obedient? What did you learn about God? How did God speak to you in this tough time? When we look back and view our circumstances through this kind of lens, you see how it becomes possible to be thankful in all circumstances. God is always there, always leading, always giving us the chance to know Him better and experience Him more fully. Regardless of the circumstances, this is something we can always be thankful for.

Ezra - week 2

Getting home was just the beginning. Now the Israelites have to work and rebuild the Temple. It is interesting the mix of emotions the people have (check it out...Ezra 3:11-13) . I don't know how we might respond with that kind of outpouring at one of our services. We are so dedicated to bringing out the joy in people sometimes we keep them from being real. Personally, I think it would be tremendous because the "noise" would have the sweetness of honesty. Sunday night at our church's prayer service I was overwhelmed with my own mix of emotion. I was frustrated, confused, and angry, yet at the same time, joyed and hopeful. I'm glad we don't have to have things figured out. It is much easier to let go and be obedient! I also think it is interesting that in the midst of my confusion, I felt as though my heart was agreeing with God's. God is the only one I know who can be perfectly justified in his anger, yet remain perfectly steadfast in his love. That kind of conflict would eventually tear us apart. I guess, in a sense, it tore God apart as well as it prompted him to send his Son to the cross. On the cross we see God's love and anger reconciled. There is so much I don't understand, yet more than anything I'm grateful.

Back to Ezra...God's present temple, the Church (universal), is truly a thing of beauty. Yet I weep knowing it could be even more beautiful. I long for the church's apostolic beauty to shine again. I know it can. I believe it will.

Ezra - week 1

Hello friends! Although we all want to stay in the FLOW (and thank God we can!), this week we start on a new journey. One found in the Old Testament of the Bible. We are going to be reading through the book of Ezra, along with some readings from the prophets. This is the time in biblical history when the Jews returned to Israel from their exile and begin to rebuild. The title of the teaching series is "The Path to Restoration". While this describes Israel, I hope we can find some application for our own lives and the life of the church. This week we will be discussing the first step, which was the return home. Does anyone have any good stories about returning home?

The reading plan is available at www.fourseasonschurch.org.

FLOW

"Flow" is the title of our summer teaching series. It revolves around living life in the stream of the Holy Spirit (Jn 7:38). The title is also ironic because we need to get back in the flow of dialoging on the blog! I'm looking forward to some good questions and answers. This post will serve us the end of this week and heading into next. God bless us all as we seek to follow the leading of the Spirit in our lives. Sometimes propriety puts us at odds with what we think is the quickest path to get what we want (even when we want good things). In our culture, the plan is usually, "Do what you want to get what you want." God's plan is always, "Do what I want and I'll give you what I want." For the believer, this is good news because as our hearts mature, we begin to desire what God wants for us. We also realize that His plan is always best. Still, it takes discipline to stay the course when it appears that we are putting the outcome at risk. Ruth's story is a great illustration of how God rewards those who do what is right. In your life, how has a sense of propriety affected the way you make decisions? If it hasn't been a conscious consideration, have you felt its pressure on your heart unexpectedly? Do the ends ever justify the means?

Ruth 2

The reading plan is posted on the church website!
www.fourseasonschurch.org

Ruth 1

I apologize for not having a new reading plan posted yet. It has been interpreted a few different ways. The first three verses have had their own place in the history of church division, as have the meaning of the strong warning of v. 4-8. As we discuss this passage and share our questions and answers, let's not lose focus of what we can be confident about. "We have this hope - like a sure and firm anchor of the soul" (v. 19). Praise be to our High Priest Jesus!

Hebrews 5

There is a part in Hebrews 5 that is a strong rebuke to many Christians: "You have been Christians a long time now, and you ought to be teaching others. Instead, you need someone to teach you again the basic things a beginner must learn about the Scriptures." (5:12) Maturing in the Christian faith is an intentional process that includes the study of His Word. It WILL NOT happen by any other means. That's why something as simple as this blog can have such a strong impact. If you spend time in God's Word and meditate on it, your relationship with the Lord will be strengthened. It really is simple. But it is a blessing we often overlook. I say all that as an encouragement. Read the Bible regularly. It's worth it.

Hebrews 4

If you have questions about any of the readings for this week, from Hebrews 4 or elsewhere, please share them. Second, if Jesus is our perfect high priest, in what ways is he also a perfect apostle?

Hebrews 2

Welcome to Hebrews chapter two!

Joe/Vicky posted this under "Hebrews 1"

In Hebrews chapter 2 it says that Jesus was made a little lower than the angels (vs 7 & 9). This series will take us through the book of Hebrews. This New Testament book uses more material from the Old Testament than any other, hence the title of our series. You'll notice in our reading plan (available at www.fourseasonschurch.org) that there is some extra credit reading each week. If you tackle these assignments, you will have read through the book of Leviticus in addition to Hebrews when we are finished. Why Leviticus? Because Hebrews seeks to present Christ as superior to the old Levitical sacrificial system. Reading one will certainly help you understand the other. There is a wealth of wonderful insights in Hebrews and I'm excited to be studying it together. May God bless us all as we spend time in His Word.

Thessalonian Thinking

We did not have a formal reading plan for this week. The Bible says some specific things about the responsibility the church has as it represents the body of Christ in the world. It's good to review these fundamentals as we start a new year. As you read the Scriptures, ask yourself, "How are we doing?" Are there areas in which we need to focus or refocus our attention? Use this discussion as an opportunity to share your thoughts and ideas about the past and the future.

Christmas Chat Week 4

Where did the year go?

Thanks for participating in the Christmas reading. Still, I appreciate your comments and feedback.

This Sunday we will be discussing Mary's proper place in history. She was chosen and blessed. There is much to appreciate about her life. For centuries, the Church has struggled to find the proper place for her. This is most visible in the differing views of Catholics and Protestants. Although not necessarily specific to this week's reading, I would love to know your questions (if you have any) about Mary and the way she is viewed by both Catholics and Protestants.

Christmas Chat Week 1

Thanks for all your input and discussion during the "Mark: My Words" campaign. It was a great success. In fact, it worked so well we are continuing with the blog. We will once again be following the reading plan posted at www.fourseasonschurch.org. During the next four weeks we will be studying the Christmas story. On Sundays we will be talking specifically about the experiences of Joseph and Mary.

Our readings for this week begin in the Old Testament, where we read of an important promise made to David.

Mark 16

Well friends, it's been a fun trip through the Gospel of Mark. I've had fun over the past 15 weeks chatting about this book. In light of the success of "Mark: My Words" we will be doing more blogs in the future...so stay tuned!

Mark 16 is the dramatic conclusion to this biography of Christ. Are there really any better words than, "He has been resurrected!" (v. 6) Our Savior lives! This truly is the Good News. Mark 16 also contains what has become some controversial teaching, especially in our part of the country, Appalachia more specifically (see vv. 17-18). While we often make jokes, there are churches today that still practice snake handling and poison drinking. Depending on your translation however, you may notice something unique about vv. 9-20. These verses may be bracketed, or there may be special footnotes. This is becuase these verses are not contained in the oldest, most reliable Biblical manuscripts. This means that vv. 9-20 are most likely later additions. But why? Some think that Mark ends a bit abruptly. Imagine that Mark 16 actually ended with v. 8. Do you think the story is complete?

Mark 15

"My God, My God, why have you forsaken me?" Of course, it wasn't so much given as remembered or clarified. It's amazing how something so seemingly simple, "Love God and love your neighbor," (my paraphrase) could get so complicated. Chapter 10 contains a very familiar story to most of us. It's commonly called the "The Rich Young Ruler." It's from this story that we get the oft' repeated verse, "It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingodom of God." (10:25) While I agree that it is difficult for the rich to arrange their priorities, I think verse 27 is really the moral of the story. "With man this is impossible, but not with God; all things are possible with God."

Mark 9

Ever had a "mountain top" experience? You know, those special times of intimacy with the Lord; times when the Lord feels so close that you wonder why you ever have doubts. Well, in Mark 9 we read of perhaps the greatest mountain top experience ever, what is often referred to as the Transfiguration. The passage receives this title because in it we read of Jesus being transformed (or transfigured) into his glorified resurrection state. He becomes indescribably white. He is also visited by Moses and Elijah. Peter was so awed by the experience that he wanted to set up tabernacles (tents) so that they could all stay together on the mountain. The Scripture seems to indicate that this idea comes to Peter because in his amazement, he can't think of anything else to say or do. What do you think about Peter's response? How do you think you would have responded?

Mark 8

Welcome to Mark 8! Chapter 8 is the halfway point in the gospel. There are lots of great things to comment on in the chapter. I look forward to reading your thoughts. I especially love the opening interaction between Jesus and the disciples. After feeding the 5000, and then 4000, the disciples seem perplexed at how to stretch one loaf of bread between them. As much as I would like to mock the disciples, I think we often do the same thing. The Lord will bless us with a great financial gift for our ministry, yet moments later it seems we will worry about support. This is true of our personal finances as well. I'm sure there are times Jesus looks at us and says, "Don't you understand yet?" I had too many good things related to Mark 6 to fit into a week, so I figured we could simply run into this week. Day two's reading finally gets us to Mark 7. The chapter starts with some good teaching about the dangers of tradition. Can anyone relate to that? I know our church is young, but these problems can take hold quickly if we are not careful. I pray our hearts will always pursue the will of the Lord alone.

Mark 6

I don't have power yet...but Jesus does! The chapter closes with a narrative telling of the disciples fear in the midst of a storm. As I read Mark 4 this morning, my mind was drawn to Hurricane Gustav. I imagined the disciples riding out the storm in some house or hotel on the Gulf, perhaps even on one of those oil rigs. Understandably, they are afraid. Where is Jesus? Asleep. Maybe that's not an exact parallel, but my mind couldn't help going there.

What are your impressions of this chapter? Do any of the parables really resonate with you?

Mark 3

I mentioned on Sunday three things to keep an eye out for as we read. I thought it might good to list these here as a reminder. First, Jesus is always teaching about the nature of the Kingdom and how it differed from the people's expectations. Take note of these descriptions and see how they might be applied to the church. How are these descriptions different or similar to your own expectations? Second, Jesus' divinity and authority are often presented. Some of these affirmations are straightforward, others are more subtle. Often, Jesus says and does things that are only possible if He is God. Third, although Jesus teaches often to crowds, we also see Him making a deeper investment in a few. Notice in Mark 3 He chooses the 12 "to be with Him." (3:14). Pay special attention to Jesus' teaching of the disciples. How can we apply these lessons in our own Spiritual walk?

I'm looking forward to another great week! God bless!

Mark 2

Welcome to the second week of our adventure! This week, in addition to reading from the Gospels, we will also be reading from the Old Testament and the book of Hebrews. I noticed some good comments about Leviticus by Bob on the Mark 1 stream, be sure to check them out. The first story in Mark 2 is about some friends who are determined to take their paralyzed friend to see Jesus. As I was reading, I was amazed that Jesus forgave and healed the man based not only on his faith (the paralyzed man's faith), but as a result of seeing their faith. What a wonderful picture of intercession!

Please post your own comments and questions to this week's readings. The responses so far have been great. "Mark: My Words" is a new teaching series of Four Seasons Community Church that will take us through the book of Mark. My name is Pastor Mike (actually everyone just calls me Mike) and I will be the host for this blog. As part of the series, we have asked our church attenders to join us in reading through the book a chapter a week. Additional Scripture reading has also been suggested to supplement the teaching. For a listing of the readings, you can visit our church website, www.fourseasonschurch.org. It's my hope to use this forum as an avenue for people to ask questions and share insights. I will also ask some questions from time to time to spur on the conversation. I look forward to the coming weeks as we learn together.
